Shape & Surface Grinding

CNC grinding is practical when the desired application can be done more efficiently, but a large portion of the tooling we build still requires the skills of a manual machine operator. Contrary to popular belief, there is still the need for manual shape/face grinding. Our form grinding department has ten Brown & Sharp surface grinders equipped with magna-sines. We also have all of the accessories to complete the job accurately and efficiently, i.e.…radius dressers, angle dressers, squaring fixtures, v blocks, Harig and other grinding fixtures. A wide variety of stone, diamond and borazon wheels are stocked. Next to each machine is an 18” x 24” granite Starrett surface plate that is resurfaced and calibrated annually.

Another essential tool in the form grinding department is a Nikon Measurescope MM-22 equipped with a digital Quadra-Chek 2000 readout. This enables the operator to accurately measure dimensions within .00005. Another important feature of this microscope is the built in programs, which adds to its versatility. This department also has two Scherr Tumico optical comparators with 30” diameter viewing screens. The magnifications we use are 10x, 20x, 50x, and 100x. We use Mylar drawings plotted out to the desired magnification dependent upon the size and tolerance of the part to be viewed.
